Neil Koivu is a highly talented and passionate Lighting Designer based in the Metro Detroit area. With a wealth of experience and a diverse portfolio, Neil has carved a prominent niche for himself in the world of theatrical lighting design. His creative expertise has illuminated the stages of numerous esteemed theater companies, including Meadow Brook Theatre, Tipping Point Theatre, Detroit Public Theatre, The Nicely Theatre Group, and The Jewish Ensemble Theatre.

Neil pursued his education at Wayne State University, majoring in Theatre Tech and Design, where he acquired the technical expertise and creative acumen to excel in the field. His dedication to his craft, paired with his hunger for new projects and continuous improvement, makes him a valued asset to any production he's involved in.

Neil's journey continued during his time as an intern at Culver Academies, where he not only honed his skills as a designer but also shared his passion for the craft by teaching an introductory theater course. During his internship, he took on the responsibility of building and designing shows, showcasing his versatility and dedication to the art form.

Over the years, Neil has contributed significantly to the Gem and Century Theatre, leaving his mark on their productions as an production electrician and construction lead. Presently, he continues to shine in the industry as a valued member of The Berman Center for the Performing Arts, where his work continues to captivate audiences and complement performances with evocative lighting designs, and as a manager behind the scenes.

Neil's curiosity and enthusiasm for learning drive him to explore new territories constantly. As an avid reader, he seeks inspiration from various sources, broadening his artistic horizons and refining his craft. When not immersed in his lighting projects, Neil enjoys indulging his passion for discovery by visiting the Zoo and Museums, finding inspiration in nature and art alike.

Beyond the theater, Neil finds joy in culinary pursuits, showcasing his skills in the kitchen and on his back deck, where he revels in the art of cooking and grilling. This love for experimenting with flavors and techniques mirrors his approach to lighting design, always seeking fresh ways to enhance the stage and elevate theatrical experiences. He’s loves making Christmas feel special and favorite vacations are when he can sit with his feet in water and reading a book.
