Neil Koivu is a highly talented and passionate Lighting Designer based in the Metro Detroit area. With over a decade of professional experience and a diverse portfolio, Neil has carved a prominent niche for himself in the world of theatrical lighting design. His career reached a memorable high when the legendary Ben Vereen complimented his "style and class" during a concert Neil lit for the award-winning performer—while Neil sported his signature bow tie. A Wilde Award nominee for the remount of Eric Gutman’s From Broadway to Obscurity with Detroit Public Theatre, Neil brings artistry and technical expertise to every project.
Neil pursued his education at Wayne State University, majoring in Theatre Tech and Design, where he acquired the technical expertise and creative acumen to excel in the field. His dedication to his craft, paired with his hunger for new projects and continuous improvement, makes him a valued asset to any production he's involved in. His journey continued during his time as an intern at Culver Academies, where he not only honed his skills as a designer but also shared his passion for the craft by teaching an introductory theater course. During his internship, he took on the responsibility of building and designing shows, showcasing his versatility and dedication to the art form.
Throughout his career, Neil has showcased his talents as a Lighting Designer, Sound Designer, Scenic Designer, and Production Electrician. His impressive portfolio includes collaborations with celebrated performers such as Thornetta Davis, Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone, Charles Strouse, Bebe Neuwirth, and Barbara Cook. Whether designing for theater or concerts, Neil's creativity and attention to detail shine through.

Beyond the theater, Neil finds joy in culinary pursuits, showcasing his skills in the kitchen and on his back deck, where he revels in the art of cooking and grilling. This love for experimenting with flavors and techniques mirrors his approach to lighting design, always seeking fresh ways to enhance the stage and elevate theatrical experiences. Neil also enjoys indulging his passion for discovery by visiting the Zoo and Museums, finding inspiration in nature and art alike. He’s especially fond of making Christmas feel special and considers vacations by the water, book in hand, to be the ultimate retreat.
